Comments about Pick your own farms in Florida

This page provides a detailed comments submitted by visitors to pick- your- own (PYO, U-pick, pick-it-yourself) farms in Florida.

In reading comments, whether they are positive or negative, bear in mind that everyone's experience varies.  We try to weed out emails which are clearly fakes or so extreme as to be implausible.  When we get negative feedback about a farm or orchard, we contact the farm, and provide them the comments (without any reference to the person who submitted them) to allow them to respond.  We then publish both the visitor's comments and the farm's response.

In the past several years, we can happily say that negative comments have been very rare.  the vast majority of people find the the trip to be immensely rewarding!

Oak Haven Farms in Lake County

  • A visitor writes on March 02, 2009: "I live in Marion County. A neighbor & I went in February 2009 to Oak Haven because we wanted to PYO (it had been at least 15 years since the last time I did that!). At $2.10/lb., had we known that BEFORE we drove an hour away, we would have gone to the local grocery store that was selling Plant City strawberries for $1.99/lb--already picked!! The farm does not advertise its prices on the phone recording--they should make that fact known. Nonetheless, we were there and picked till our backs could stand no more (about 2 flats worth) (one whole row). Total picking time was 30 minutes, with another hour's drive back home. The farm uses Camarosa strawberry plants. I have to say that they were a sweet, juicy strawberry, and not quite as acidic as some I've eaten. The farm is also trying their had at growing Vidalia onions, in small quantity. All in all, we had a nice day exploring new territory and doing something different. Then there was the daunting task of prepping the strawberries upon arrival back at home!!! M-m-m-m-m. "
  • A visitor writes on March 28, 2005 - A friend recently introduced me to Oak Haven Farms in Lake County. It was a wonderful surprise. We went on Friday a couple of weeks ago and were so impressed we went back for their Family Days two days later. For their Family Days they had a rented Moon Walk Slide, zipline and hayrides for the kids as well as a cook-your-own hotdog area with an open fire. All of those things were special for the Family Days but they always have a tire swing, playground and small store. Their strawberry fields were well maintained and they directed "pickers" in an orderly way so that it was easy to find good rows that weren't overpicked. Their picnic areas and restrooms were spotless. Everyone working there who we encountered was pleasant and gracious. Parking was close and plentiful.
