This month's notes: February 2012: Winter is upon us, but don't despair! Strawberry and citrus picking actually begins in Florida, southern Texas and southern Californiaa in December. And for the rest of us; there are many delicious jams, jellies, and marmalades that you can make for yourself or as gifts, from frozen or fresh fruit. See this page for hundreds of easy canning and freezing instructions/recipes, canning equipment guide! Also make your own ice cream - see How to make ice cream and ice cream making equipment and manuals. Then see each state's crop availability calendar for more specific dates of upcoming crops. Organic farms are identified in green! See our guide to local fruit and vegetable festivals!. Please tell the farms you found them here - and ask them to update their information!!

Advertising options on Pickyourown.rg!
Advertising and Dedicated Web Pages on PickYourOwn.org, PumpkinPatchesAndMore.org, PickYourOwnChristmasTree.org and LocalFarmMarkets.org
I aim to always provide free basic listing for farms to encourage every farm to get listed here! The goal is to provide a comprehensive, accurate and current resource for consumers to find Pick-Your-Own farms! This is who-what-where-when-how much information; factual and to the point.
Of course, it does cost money to run the website, and there are ways to get even more visibility for your farm that I cannot provide for free because they increase my costs. You may wish to build more business with larger listings, photos, graphics, banners and other advertising!
The paid advertisements for farms on the website come in four forms:
- Adding photos to your listing - Photos tremendously
improve the visibility of your listing! If you'd like to add photos to your
listing you need only email them to me and I'll resize them to fit the page
and listing (typically about 120 px by 120 px). There is a fee, to cover the
my costs which include the need for additional bandwidth. The cost for
photos is $55/year for 2 photos on a listing. If you haven't got digital
versions of your photos you can mail me a paper copy and I'll scan them at
no additional charge.
- Top of the county listings Banner Advertising - Starts at $150
per year, per page (some very popular pages are more). A leaderboard (728 x
90) banner ad listing at the top of the county where your farm is listed
right below the county name. The ad may have a logo, image or photos, links,
a border and colors! Blinking and pop-ups are prohibited, as are ads for
content that is inappropriate for a family, small children, etc. This
option is ideal for farms, events, manufacturers, distributors and sellers
of products and services that are appropriate for an diverse family audience
that represents a wide cross-section of the population.
- Top of the page listings Banner Advertising - Starts at $250 per
year, per page (some very popular pages are more). A leaderboard (728 x 90)
banner ad listing at the top of the listings, right below the listing header
you will see on each page (such as, below: "U-Pick Farms and Orchards,
sorted by county", "Pumpkin Patches, Corn Mazes, Hay Rides and More, by
County", etc.) . It may have a logo, image or photos, links, a border and
colors! Blinking and pop-ups are prohibited, as are ads for content that is
inappropriate for a family, small children, etc. This option is ideal for
farms, events, manufacturers, distributors and sellers of products and
services that are appropriate for an diverse family audience that represents
a wide cross-section of the population.
- Featured, expanded listings - $115 per year. A banner-type
listing on the page that is relevant to the farm (the farm's geographic
area). It may have a logo, image or photos, a border and colors! The links
to you website are direct, with no banner, ads or anything else. Below is an
example. And for another example, see this page:
http://www.pumpkinpatchesandmore.org/VApnorthen.php#listings . And if
you have your own website, we also drop the ad banner frameset across the
tops on links to your website, and give you a direct link!
Rock
Farm U-Pick Farm Pick your own sweet
corn, tomatoes, blackberries, apples, scuppernongs and muscadine grapes Be sure to visit their website and the farm! |
- Custom Website or dedicated page(s) - Your farm's own web pages
Websites are $275 per year for up to 3 web pages (each up to 100k of text and images), which you can design; or we can do for you (and no extra cost for 3 simple pages), containing text, images, links, etc.Typically, the pages are (click on the links to see an example):
- a home page,
- a maps, directions, and contact information page, and
- harvest updates, crop information, special activities and events, etc.
Of course, if you need additional pages, we can add them at $25/yr each.
The url (address) would be similar to: http://www.pickyourown.org/happyhillsfarms/home.htm etc.
If you'd like your own domain name (e.g., www.yourfarmname.com ) that adds $35 /year, or you can obtain it yourself and I'll include it.
-
A dedicated webpage for your farm
$95/year. One page dedicated to your farm, event or activity, with no other content, or ads, other than the standard footer with links back to PickYourOwn. 12 free updates per year.
This is a good option for a farm that just wants a page on the internet, dedicated to their farm, without popup ads and other junk. Here, you can put contact information, several photos, a map, directions, seasonal hours and dates, events, etc. Update it monthly, or as often as you like (up to 15 times per year, additional updates beyond that are $5 each, just stop avoid abuse), allowing you to keep it current to the month, season and events! Send updates and changes via email. This gives you the advantages of having your own dedicated website, without needing to learn how to build a website, acquiring domain names, hosting, etc. Your page has its own url, like http://pickyourown.org/yourfarmsname.htm. You can even replace that with your own domain name, www.yourfarmsname.com, for only an additional $15/year. This is probably not a suitable option for a farm that has constantly changing information, or is a large, complex operation, or has an owner that is very fussy and wants a very particular look and feel (those are situations where the farm should get their own website). I'm not making money at these rates; this is just to help farms get their own page on the internet, who could not otherwise afford it or master the technology.
If you are interested in either advertising or webpages, just write me by clicking on the Feedback link here.

How do these advertising costs and benefits compare with other alternatives?
Here are some examples of the costs of other forms of advertising, just for printing and distribution, not including creating the ads itself:- Yellow Pages: $16/month for a regular one line listing, $110/month for a 1" space ad, $1,346/month for a half page ad; a bold, one-line
- White Pages listing runs $24.50/month.
- Small, local suburban newspaper: $10-$30 per column inch per insertion. (A column inch is about 2.062" wide and 1" high -- a regular business card is about 2" by 3.5": $35-$105 each time it appears.) Spot color can add $100 per color.
- Large city newspapers: $300 or more for a column inch.
- Business cards: $20-$100, stationery (letterhead and envelopes): $200-$300.
- Brochures can be much more expensive - a simple brochure can cost a few dollars each time someone requests one to be sent out.
- Total newspaper advertising revenue in 2000 was $49 billion (national and local advertising) -- $4.2 billion more than broadcast TV. Local Yellow Pages advertising was $11.1 billion (national Yellow Pages advertising was $2.1 billion).
Links and compliance with Google's policies:
Paid links will carry the rel="nofollow" tag, as required by Google (see this NY Times article about JC Penny (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/13/business/13search.html )and Google’s policies, http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66736 ). This does not interfere with sending traffic to your website (it is behind the scenes and is required by Google)
Remember to ALWAYS call the farm or orchard BEFORE you go - weather, heavy picking and business conditions can always affect their hours and crops!
