Where in Ontario, Canada to find pick your own farms and orchards for fruit, vegetables, pumpkins and canning & freezing instructions!

This month's notes: May 2013: The cool weather has delayed blooms and slowed growth by a couple of weeks, but don't miss strawberries: they started in most Southern areas in late April, and in late May up north. Click here for strawberry facts and picking tips, and this page for easy strawberry jam making directions. Blueberries will come in June in most areas. Of course, Florida, southern Texas, and other very warm areas are already picking both crops! See this page for hundreds of easy canning and freezing instructions/recipes, canning equipment guide! Also make your own ice cream - see How to make ice cream and ice cream making equipment and manuals. Then see each state's crop availability calendar for more specific dates of upcoming crops. Organic farms are identified in green!  See our guide to local fruit and vegetable festivals!. Please tell the farms you found them here - and ask them to update their information!!

Comments from a visitor on September 07, 2011:
(positive experience) "I have been picking berries at Linley's Farm for 5 or 6 years, and have always had a wonderful experience. I have never heard any shouting or rudeness; on the contrary the farm staff are good-humoured and very accomodating. I have seen many young children with parents and family groups who are enjoying the experience of "picking your own." I think parents need to be aware that this is a farm, someone's livelihood, and not an amusement park for kids. I always follow the directions of staff because I understand that these directions are part of good farm management - they know what they are doing. It's a give and take experinece - they get their fields picked in an organized manner, and I get tasty organic berries at a fair price. The taste and the fact that this farm doesn't use insecticides and fungicides is why I keep coming back. So don't listen to the complainers, this is a great farm."
Comments from a visitor on July 09, 2011:
(positive experience) "I have three young children, 7 and under and we had the most awesome time picking that we've ever had. I wonder if they've heard about their negative comments. The staff went above and beyond - with even one staff offering her van for my friend to change her baby's diaper - The strawberries at the top of the field were the best - my friend was offered the top of the field because she had a baby on a blanket and they accommodated her with such gentleness. I think any negative comments have either been taken into consideration, or they hired new staff. We had over-and-above kindness. We especially love the fact that they don't spray and they even offered my kids the opportunity to 'eat a couple' as they pick. Such fun."
Comments from a visitor on June 29, 2010:
(negative experience) "I am writing in regards to some negative remarks about this farm. Back in June 2005, we also have an unsavory experience from Lindley's. I was so excited to bring my Dad, my sister who were visiting us and my son who has a special needs, to pick fresh strawberries. As soon as we got our baskets, we were told to go towards the group of people that were already picking on a certain row. My son was so excited to pick his own, started to pick some along his way. The next thing you know, we were yelled at very loudly from a distance by this obnoxious lady telling us to "get moving", "are we blind?" Before I can make any comments, she adds, that I should know better to look after my son and that he was my responsibility. As if I need reminding. My son along with the other kids with autism, cannot tolerate loud booming noises. With his hands cupping his ears, he went ahead to the lady yelling at us and asked her to stop yelling because it hurts his ears. Her response,(again yelling at us)was if we can't follow her directions then we should leave. Did I mention that she pushed my son because she thought that my son is attacking her? I mean my son is only 8 yrs old at that time. They were so many people who were watching us. We were so embarrased getting screamed at in front of so many people. I demanded to see the owner but he did'nt even do anything. He even told us that we weren't following the directions even though I tried to explain that my son is Autistic and that he did'nt know any better. He wasn't listening to us at all. I had to speak louder so that I could be heard but to no avail. Needless to say, we got out of that farm very quickly. Prior to this, we've been going to Lindley's Farm every Fall for the hay ride and pumpkin picking since my son was born. After this horrid experience, I vowed to myself that we will never go back to that place...ever! If they wanted everyone to follow the rules, Lindley's Farm should have a clear written rules on the stall where we picked the baskets from. This would have been beneficial for all of us "who are blind"...That was a very, very bad experience. I would not ever recommend anyone to go there, with disability or not!"
Comments from a visitor on May 06, 2010:
(negative experience) "I have to say that I totally agree with the negative comments towards lindleys! I was there for the first time with some family and the lady was very rude. We didnt know the rules, but were quickly yelled at and embarassed in front of everyone! She was yelling at us about which row was ours. I will NEVER go back!"
Comments from a visitor on July 06, 2009:
(positive experience) "I have to address the negative comments that were written about Lindley's Farm. I have picked vegies and fruits for many years and have observed very bad behaviour on behalf of the pickers/customers themselves. People don't understand that the farm hand guides you to specific rows to pick so that each area is "cleaned" - otherwise, the farmer loses track of where people have picked and many berries go unpicked. This causes huge waste and loss of revenue for the farmer. The farmer deserves to make a profit, they are not there to just entertain you. I get frustrated myself, with inconsiderate people who trample all over the berries and refuse to listen when they are guided to their area. Rudeness is returned by rudeness. So pickers, listen and obey directions, then you will have a positive experience!"
Comments from a visitor on June 28, 2009:
(negative experience) "We went to Lindleys Farm and Market on June 27. We had decided not to go after reading the negative reviews last week, but changed our minds and wanted to try this week after reading the positive review on June 26th, 2009. We told ourselves that this is our neighborhood farm. If they want to do business why would they yell at people? In the beginning the experience was OK, even though the guide lady used the wording "The red ones HAVE TO BE PICKED” and we were assigned two lanes with another family (we didn't know them) within short distance (face to face) to pick. When we finished our area and still wanted more, she would assign us rows. When we asked for new rows, the lady doubted "Have you met other people?”. May be this is their business style. On the way out, when we finished, my husband found a lovely berry and bent down to pick it, but the farm lady yelled so loudly at us, that it embarrassed us! "
Comments from a visitor on June 26, 2009:
(positive experience) "I feel compelled to write a comment because I was shocked to see three negative reviews of Lindley's farm! I was there last summer during the same week that those reviews were written and never had anyone yell at me or harass me. I have been going to Lindley's for years now, it is the only pick-your-own farm I go to and I haven't had a single bad experience, only very positive. I go there for u-pick strawberries, peas, beets, raspberries, currants and pumpkins and I love it there. I have never encountered any so called "strawberry nazis" in fact, all the staff out in the field have been so helpful and kind. They are also really great with my daughter and other kids that go there- they answer all their questions and are very friendly! One time when my daughter had wandered too far and I'd been having a hard time trying to chase her around all morning, one of the farmers went and got her and brought her back to me! I was just there today picking strawberries and the woman out in the field was being very friendly to my daughter and some other kids, answering all their many, many questions, etc. Not to mention the fact that all their produce is amazing and they are striving toward more organic farming methods, which I really appreciate. I hope that those negative reviews will not deter people from going to this farm. Please go and see for yourself! "
Has anyone else had experiences here, positive or negative, can either confirm or refute this one?  If so, please write!

Comments from a visitor on July 02, 2011: "Took the whole family (three kids 6 and younger) out for PYO strawberries, it was a good experience. Found the rows to be a little tight together but the staff were great, never made a deal about the kids. We've been to other PYO strawberry farms and they have always spoken sternly about the kids. We know how to keep out kids in line, thank you. Anyway, the strawberry crop was quite nice. We also picked some sugar snap peas, great price on both. Will be back there each year for more."
Comments from a visitor on July 21, 2009: "We picked raspberries at Murphy's today and it was an altogether nice experience. The young woman in the field was friendly and helpful; the berries were great; we were charged a competitive price; their pride in their farm is evident as everything is beautifully kept. We will definitely be back for more berries (and corn!) after we have eaten our way through today's yummy harvest. My husband & I are always impressed with how these hard-working farmers accept the losses they experience with people who come in their fields and pick only the very best & easiest to reach fruit, leaving many to rot on the plants. Customers should try to stand in the farmer's shoes for just a moment. Shame on those who are so wasteful.
Comments from a visitor on July 05, 2009: "Today we were at one of the many farms we visit every year. We were there to pick strawberries. Since it was near the end of season the girl in the field told us to go where ever we could fine ripe nice berries. She then came over 15 minutes before the field closed to tell us that if our baskets were not full, we would not be charged full price. We realized it would take us longer to fill our basket (wanting to let the workers go home on time after a long hot day) and we had 3/4 of a basket so we decided to go. Once we left the field to pay for our basket the girl at the gate told us we would have to pay full price. When I challenged this she said it was "pretty full" so we would have to pay the full amount. "Pretty full" and full are two different things... She continued to be rude and we will never return to this farm again. We all work hard for our money and I love to support our local farms, but this farm can not encourage me to leave with a 3/4 full basket and then ask me to pay in full. I will support someone else for my strawberries next year, and look to pick raspberries elsewhere this season."

Comments from a visitor on July 11, 2010: "I have taken my own children and my home daycare children to this farm for a few years now, and love it. The only pick your own they have now is the strawberries and they are so worth it! These strawberries practically melt in your mouth and are so sweet! If you missed the early season this year, they do still have some out in baskets inside; all the flavour without all the work of picking it yourself! I have never had a bad experience there. Small and friendly. I'll continue to go back there every year!"

Home Canning Kits

Features:

* All the tools you need for hot waterbath canning - in one comprehensive set!
* Complete with 21 1/2 qt. enameled waterbath canner
* Also includes canning rack, funnel, jar lifter, jar wrencher, bubble freer, tongs and lid lifter.

This is the same type of standard canner that my grandmother used to make everything from applesauce to jams and jellies to tomato and spaghetti sauce. This complete kit includes everything you need and lasts for years: the canner, jar rack, jar grabber tongs, lid lifting wand, a plastic funnel, labels, bubble freer. It's much cheaper than buying the items separately. You'll never need anything else except jars & lids (and the jars are reusable)! There is also s simple kit with just the canner and rack, and a pressure canner, if your want to do vegetables (other than tomatoes).
