Where in Alberta, Canada to find pick your own farms and orchards for fruit, vegetables, pumpkins and canning & freezing instructions!
This month's notes: May 2013: The cool weather has delayed blooms and slowed growth by a couple of weeks, but don't miss strawberries: they started in most Southern areas in late April, and in late May up north. Click here for strawberry facts and picking tips, and this page for easy strawberry jam making directions. Blueberries will come in June in most areas. Of course, Florida, southern Texas, and other very warm areas are already picking both crops! See this page for hundreds of easy canning and freezing instructions/recipes, canning equipment guide! Also make your own ice cream - see How to make ice cream and ice cream making equipment and manuals. Then see each state's crop availability calendar for more specific dates of upcoming crops. Organic farms are identified in green! See our guide to local fruit and vegetable festivals!. Please tell the farms you found them here - and ask them to update their information!!

Comments from a visitor on September 28, 2010: "We love visiting this farm. It's beautiful and usually the strawberries are so plentiful to doesn't take long to fill a bucket. The staff is very laid back and makes you feel at home. We make it an annual visit and spend the day or weekend doing all kinds of things out there, and our freezer is always full of yummy produce by the end. They have tons of different vegetables to buy in their shop, as well as a few different options for U pick. The farm is set on a river with a campground and playground, it's great for day use or camping overnight. They also have some historical buildings and other activities to keep one busy." - Fenton Saskatoon Farm - Saskatoon berries

Comments from a visitor on July 28, 2010: "I went to Kayben Farms on Saturday to pick strawberries. Their website said first come, first served, so I went early. The field opens at 10 and I was there at 8, the first and only car for about an hour. They don't actually mean first come, first served. They mean, open chaos starts at 10. Everyone was led from the parking lot into the garden centre, were told the berries were bad, then were sent with little 1L containers into the field without any supervision or instruction on how to pick strawberries. What resulted was nearly a riot. I'm not certain how they actually make money because of the number of berries that were squished or left behind by the mob. I will not be back to Kayben Farms because this was the worst u-pick experience that I could imagine. "
Comments from a visitor on August 24, 2010: "To respond to the person who had such an unfortunate experience at our place on July 28: We are so very sorry that your experience was like this. The strawberry season was very difficult for us as well. We debated about opening at all, since more than 75% of our plants were lost due to weather. In the end, we opened due to overwhelming interest and not wanting to waste the fruit that was available. It was impossible to estimate how many people would come out and despite our best efforts to forewarn our customers of the reality of the situation, they came hoping to be the lucky ones who got fruit. We can’t blame them for being disappointed. We have closed the strawberry fields for the season and will replant in 2011. On a good note: the black currant crop is plentiful and beautiful, with 20 acres available. We have also opened up the u-pick vegetable garden which has been enthusiastically received. Click here for our Facebook page. Black Earth Humic LP originally
took shape in 1998, focusing on development of products and markets
for high-grade reserves of humus material. The raw material of all
Black Earth products is humalite – a weathered type of sub-bituminous
coal found only in Alberta and mined exclusively for Black Earth Humic
LP. High in humic and fulvic acids yet low in ash and toxic metals,
our humalite is superior to lignite and leonardite. By exploiting its
chemical and physical properties, we develop innovative, highly
effective products for a wide range of applications in
the agricultural, environmental and industrial sectors. (ADDED: July

There
seems to be no commonly agreed-upon way to organize or subdivide Alberta,
so I've roughly adopted the Indian regions map, as it appears to group
areas by population centers as well as geography.
Yellow = Edmonton area
Light Orange / Tan = Camrose-Drumheller area
Light blue = Red Deer area
Gray = Calgary area
Blue-purple = Southeast Alberta, including Medicine Hat and Lethbridge
Blue = Northwest Alberta, including Grand Prairie and Athabasca
Green = Northeast Alberta, including Fort McMurray
Orange = Southwest Alberta, including Banff, Jasper and Rocky Mountain House
