- Atlanta State Farmers
Market

16 Forest Pkwy, Forest Park, GA 30297. Phone: (404) 675-1782. Email: cneilse@agr.state.ga.us (Craig Neilsen). Directions: Map and directions. This is THE big one in Georgia; a REAL farmer's market, with acres of stalls, to which the farmers bring truckloads of produce every morning. At 150 acres, the Atlanta Market is considered one of the largest of its kind in the world. It has a garden center, wholesale and retail sales, and is a major distribution point for fresh produce in the Southeast and throughout the country. The Forest Park Farmer's Market also has a restaurant, welcome center and USDA Federal-State office.
On the weekends, they're only open Saturday till noon, so get there early! Sundays are closed.
Their
prices are good but shop around and haggle; don't buy from the first stand
you see, as prices vary greatly. I can usually get apples there for about
$14 to $18 a bushel in October (although I suspect the high price of gas my
drive up the prices this year, as they arrive by truck from as far away as
Washington State!). Click
here for a listing of the vendors farm stands, produce companies, etc.: with
their phone numbers and a photo of their stall. As far as I know, this
is the only such listing of the vendors at the Atlanta/Forest Park Farmer's
Market available anywhere!
Directions: Map It is right next to the Forest park exit off of I-075, just outside the Perimeter (I-285) on the south side of Atlanta. You can't miss (well, if you can, you shouldn't have a driver's license, their sign is about 75 ft tall)

I know about this because I have been a customer at another market, 10-10 market (Douglas County, Georgia, in Crossroads Church) that has closed "for the season" (likely permanently) because the county opened up this market. Athens Farmers Market is a not--for-profit organization of local farmers, craftspeople and volunteers working to make local naturally grown food, crafts and works or art available for the good of all. Read article about AFM in the Athens Banner Herald. And click here to download the Athens Farmers Market flyer. The growers will be required to use sustainable farming methods to be affirmed by signing an affidavit and agreeing to allow a farm inspection. The guidelines for the market’s requirements for sustainable farming are as described by “Certified Naturally Grown”, an alternative certification program that follows the rules set forth by the National Organics Program.
A visitor writes (May 22, 2008) "This market has been around for a while but just moved and did a lot of media work. Last Sat. was the first day and there were over 2600 people who passed through in about 2 hours. I was all excited about it and got there about 9 and everything was GONE! It was amazing. The public really turned out and supported. The farmers were stunned I think. Hopefully it will be just as exciting this coming Saturday." - Athens Green Market

A visitor writes on June 14, 2010: "This farm is in Newington, GA, about 45 minutes from Savannah. This farm is terrific! We went on a lark, looking for blackberries and peaches, and caught them just at the beginning of their crop. This also happened to be the last weekend they were selling strawberries. The lady working there was wonderful - she told us that their strawberries were the sweetest around and she was not lying! They were amazing! I just wished I'd discovered them earlier in the strawberry season! We were told that they would have other crops available soon: sweet corn, cantaloupes and watermelons! Their prices are terrific and you just can't beat the prices! Another note - their peaches were a small variety, but they made the best preserves!" -

A visitor writes on June 21, 2010: "My first time there, drove 1 1/2 hrs but it was so worth the trip. The lady in the "store" was very busy but took the time to take me out & show me the buckets for picking and how to get to the field. I picked 4 5-gal buckets in less than an hour----the field can be accessed by "drive roads" but would not recommend to cars--as there are gullies for irrigation run-offs---but the tomatoes are just beautiful and there are so many !!!! They also have already picked corn, tomatoes, beans and onions---and probably so much more--I was there for tomatoes and plan on going back later this week for more to make into salsa and for tomato soup to can...."
A visitor writes on June 11, 2010: "Very friendly people willing to go the extra distance to make sure their customers are happy. Very reasonable prices and great vegetable/fruit quality.

Grocery Stores Claiming to be "Farmer's Markets"
I'm not knocking them; I shop at them, too. They have lots of organic, healthy and upscale foods and produce (at premium prices, too). But in my opinion, they are NOT a true farmer's market! Just spreading out bulk produce, usually trucked from other states or even countries, on tables doesn't make a grocery store into a farmer's market. I only include them here because some naive' city folk just don't know any better. Let's put it this way: have you EVER seen a farmer in Harry's or Whole Foods? I didn't think so...

Home Canning KitsThis is the same type of standard canner that my grandmother used to
make everything from applesauce to jams and jellies to tomato and
spaghetti sauce. This complete kit includes everything you need and lasts
for years: the canner, jar rack, jar grabber tongs, lid lifting wand, a
plastic funnel, labels, bubble freer, and the bible of canning, the Ball
Blue Book. It's much cheaper than buying the items separately. You'll
never need anything else except jars & lids (and the jars are reusable)!
There is also s simple kit with just the canner and rack, and a pressure
canner, if your want to do vegetables (other than tomatoes). To see
more canners, of different styles, makes and prices, click here! |
