Where in West Florida to find pick your own farms and orchards for fruit, vegetables, pumpkins and canning & freezing instructions!

This month's notes: February 2012: Winter is upon us, but don't despair! Strawberry and citrus picking actually begins in Florida, southern Texas and southern Californiaa in December. And for the rest of us; there are many delicious jams, jellies, and marmalades that you can make for yourself or as gifts, from frozen or fresh fruit.  See this page for hundreds of easy canning and freezing instructions/recipes, canning equipment guide! Also make your own ice cream - see How to make ice cream and ice cream making equipment and manuals. Then see each state's crop availability calendar for more specific dates of upcoming crops. Organic farms are identified in green!  See our guide to local fruit and vegetable festivals!. Please tell the farms you found them here - and ask them to update their information!!

West Florida's U-Pick Farms and Orchards, sorted by county

Remember: ALWAYS call (or follow the link to the farm's own website, if the name is a blue link) to confirm the information before you go! They may close, run out or change events, times, etc. without notifying me! Note about strawberries in Florida: There are a few strawberry u-pick farms in Florida open during the entire season, which lasts from December through April). Most commercial farms do not open their fields to the general public until the end of the season, which is usually in April (depending on the weather).

NOTE: The exit numbers on the Interstates have changed, but we have no way of knowing what the new correct exit numbers are until the farmers correct their listings; so be sure to ask when you call the farms!

A visitor writes on May 11, 2011: "I went to pick blueberries there today. I live in Northwest Tampa and Plant City is less than an hour drive from my home. The owners were very nice. The farm was very clean and there were LOTS of big blueberries. I did not plan to pick a lot but I picked 6 buckets in so short a time. There were berries everywhere. It was a shame that I was the only picker! They provided me with clean buckets and then they transferred the berries to plastic containers like they use in grocery stores. The containers were free. I will spread the word around. I will definitely be back. I did not know that blueberry picking was a lot of fun! Thank you, Mr. & Mrs. Proctor."

We called, and they said they weren't opening that day - not enough fruit - would open the next day at 8 am (it was 5 pm). We are a small family owned and operated farm located in central Florida. Beef cows, free range chickens, naturally grown pork and hydroponically grown vegetables are what you’ll find here. Our “start to finish” program will allow those that are interested in the process the ability to select their own pig or calf. They are welcome to come out and visit their personal animal during the growth process. We naturally grow our livestock and do not use “growth hormones” to speed up this process. Once the animal is ready, we will take it to the processor of your choice. (ADDED: December 30, 2011)

We also produce raw goat milk, kefir, yogurt, goat cheese and bring raw cow milk and milk products from a Jersey Dairy in Myakka City which compliments our own goat product line. Our goats receive a few grains at milking time but currently we are making the preparations to transition to fodder by sprouting our own barley. We also have quail eggs. Also on Sundays you can find us at Sweetwater Organic Farm (sweetwater-organic.org) for their market from noon until 4pm. We pride ourselves in providing a quality product but please remember, while we drink and eat our products, we can only sell to you for pet consumption only due to Florida raw milk laws. All our products are in new containers and we only recycle egg cartons. Our milk products are all raw and our eggs are unwashed (all eggs in the stores are washed in a chemical solution) and ungraded.
