Important Notes - Please read, then click the
submit button at the bottom of the page:
I'll try to be brief, but so
many people write such poor listings that they would actually drive
their customers away and drive down the website's rankings, that I have to
state the following clearly.
Just enter the
information requested below. The text boxes are generally limited to
400
characters. The Blue Boxes are required, the yellow are
optional, but where applicable, the optional information definitely helps customers to come visit your
farm. Please be brief, but descriptive - we reserve the right to edit to remove
profanity, correct grammar and spelling or trim it down to a reasonable
size.
- Abbreviations: Please do not use ANY abbreviations
for ANYTHING. Not dates, street names, days of the week,
months, NOTHING! People do NOT search Google for "Sat.", "Ave.","M-F".
When you use ANY abbreviations, REPEAT ANY ABBREVIATIONS for
ANYTHING, you greatly reduce the chances of YOUR farm showing up in a
Google search! They ALSO look
unprofessional and often confuse potential customers. The program
tries to correct and replace any abbreviations, including "Sun." for
Sunday", "-" for "to" or "through" and so on. so if you use them, you
may get weird results.
- Use proper date format - like June 5, 2022, or June 5, 2022 to June 10, 2022.
NOT "June 5th", "June 5th, 2022", "Jun 5-6" or
"June 5th to Aug 10th". The software will go nuts trying UN-scramble it and I assure you it will get weird. For example, in a date field, it
thinks "th" is an abbreviation for Thursday, so "June 5th" becomes "June 5 Thursday"
- Capital
letters - Please do NOT type in all CAPITAL
LETTERS! (It takes me forever to change it to normal, legible type;
which must be done manually, because NO ONE WANTS TO READ TYPE LIKE THIS - and
that will considerably slow down getting your listing up!
- Links -
Add links to pages on your website where the form asks for links (but
not in the general text boxes)! The Google ads
on the banners I put on the external links are what pays for the site,
and grows commensurate with the traffic, so again, that keeps it free
for both farmers and consumers, which helps everyone! In return, I'll ask you to
link back to at least one page on PickYourOwn.org (a recipe, picking tips, whatever )
and
that will help YOUR websites ranking in the search engines, too!
- Other marketing - Generally more descriptive content is better than less. If you want to add colorful descriptive text about what makes your farm a
special visit, that's great, and I will fit as much as I can. You might want to also add a banner ad or other
advertising, which we do, too, for a small annual fee.
Future plans - I'm in the process of adding
databases, which will enable you to log on and make changes more easily
and allow much more powerful searches, by fruit, vegetable, area, etc.
It should make the website easier for you and for the customers, plus
easier to navigate! This should be ready by this winter.
