2024 Prices for U-Pick Fruits and Vegetables

2024 Prices for U-Pick Fruits and Vegetables

I've started collecting price information about the most common pick your own crops to help customers know what to expect, and to help new farmers set competitive prices. Bear with me, the level of detail, such as regional information, and accuracy will improve as I collect more information.  It should be obvious (but I guess I better state it), these are all "in-season" prices.  In the dead of winter, you won't find these crops to pick, nor at these prices in a farmstand.  And prices tend to go up at the end of the season, too. For example, you will get the best price on apple when there is a glut of them in September, when they are being harvested all over North America. And certainly, there are outliers; these represent the most commonly reported price.  Somewhere out there, there will be a farm with a higher or lower price for everything.

Eventually, I hope to be able to provide local pricing information for each crop. Help me build up the data by reporting the PYO and already picked prices at the farms you go to!

And if you have any prices to report, just click here to report them!   I'll be able to track prices by state, then also!!

2022 Update:  The ENORMOUS inflation and supply chain issues and really affected food and crop prices. Many farmers are also having difficulty getting workers to harvest the crops! Prices are changing rapidly. Expect the prices below to continue to increase dramatically.

Also see this page for how much you may need to pick to make various items (jam, pickles, salsa, etc), conversions, standard units and yields.

Other crops and Grower's / Farmers' Prices

The USDA Agriculture Department (USDA) produces it's report of the average national (and regional) prices that farmers receive for their crops.  These reports are generally released on the last day of each month.  The most recent report will be from 2 month's prior.  See this page for the most current report that we extracted.

Why do prices vary so much?

There are many legitimate reasons:

  • Some crops produce smaller yields and require more care or fertilizer in some regions than others.
  • Labor prices to maintain the farm or orchard vary
  • Insurance costs vary from farm to farm and state to state
  • Seasonal conditions that affect crops, like weather
  • Demand, as with any product, can affect prices

How much do you need to pick?

See this page to see how raw fruit and vegetables convert to canned, frozen, jams, salsa, etc.

Food-at-home prices were higher in August 2022 than in August 2021 for all categories
