A visitor writes on July 08, 2009: "I recently visited The Berry Patch (Cleveland, MO/U-pick Fruit) after using their online option to buy pre-picked blueberries.  I ordered a gallon and upon arrival, the young lady working the giftshop mentioned that the berries weren't from their farm at all, but rather, were from somewhere in Arkansas.  That news was very disappointing as my whole intention was to buy local to support their farm efforts.  Because the Berry Patch's website was not upfront about where the pre-picked fruit is from, I will more than likely not patronize their farm next year. "

They run every five minutes, so you knew you were not stranded. The trees are still small enough to pick some great fruit while standing on the ground (a six-foot orchard ladder was provided to pick from the taller trees). Our 14 month old son even got to pick an apple with very little help. The market has a covered picnic area so you can pick fruit in the morning, have lunch on site (B.Y.O.L.-Bring Your Own Lunch) and still get home at a reasonable hour. This facility is definitely family friendly, except for a lack of a modern bathroom (Johnny on the Spot outside market). Apple picking the way I remember, worth a trip with or without the kids."

Home Canning Kits

This is the same type of  standard canner that my grandmother used to make everything from applesauce to jams and jellies to tomato and spaghetti sauce. This complete kit includes everything you need and lasts for years: the canner, jar rack, jar grabber tongs, lid lifting wand, a plastic funnel, labels, bubble freer, and the bible of canning, the Ball Blue Book. It's much cheaper than buying the items separately. You'll never need anything else except jars & lids! Remember to ALWAYS call the farm or orchard BEFORE you go - weather, heavy picking and business conditions can always affect their hours and crops!
