This month's notes: February 2012: Blueberries are finishing in the Southern areas, still going in cooler areas, don't miss them! In most areas, peaches are going strong, as are figs. And apples have started. Sepetmber is the big month for apples! See each state's crop availability calendar for more specific dates. Organic farms are identified in green!  See our guide to local fruit and vegetable festivals!. See easy canning and freezing instructions/recipes, canning equipment guide! Finding a Farm is a 2 or 3 step process (you might want to print this page first)

  1. Click on the link to the state (or country outside the U.S.) where you want to find a farm, orchard, etc. The links to each state are on this page (just click the purple button labeled "Find a Farm near you" at the top left of each page) .
  2. a. for states without many farms (like Nevada): Once the new page loads, just scroll down and you will see the farms, listed in order by county.
    b. If the state is very large and has many farms, I have broken it down into more pages, generally group geographically by population centers of the state.  In this case you will need to scroll down to click on the map (or the text links) that corresponds to the area of the state that interests you! Then, on the new page, just scroll down and there are the farms.
  3. If you are looking for a specific crop or farm, just press Ctrl-F (that is the CTRL key on your keyboard AND the letter F key, at the same time. Enter the name of the crop or farm your are seeking in the box that comes up and press enter.  That allows you to search each page for a word or phrase!

All of the farms are together on the pages, for all fruits and vegetables; except Halloween-related activities (pumpkin patches, corn mazes, hay rides) which are on another website www.PumpkinPatchesAndMore.org, and Choose-and-cut your own Christmas Tree farms, with Christmas and winter activities, like sleigh rides, which are on my other website; www.PickYourOwnChristmasTree.org

For next Spring, I will have a new search engine which will enable you to search more precisely, selecting which areas, which fruit or vegetables, which month, etc. and many more criteria to find the farm that matches your needs exactly, without having to search down a long page.  For example, you may want to find an apple orchard in NY with Fuji apples that has hayrides.

I'm also adding much more information about Organic farms, and an email sign-up list, so you can receive an email reminder a couple of weeks before your favorite fruit will be ripe in your area!

I wish I could add these faster, but I do this in my spare time, for free (donations are always welcome! :)

Blake

Remember to ALWAYS call the farm or orchard BEFORE you go - weather, heavy picking and business conditions can always affect their hours and crops!
