This month's notes: February 2010: Don't miss a visit to a Christmas Tree farm - even if you have a tree; many offer free wagon rides, Santa visits and more! Most picking is done for the year, but already picked cool weather crops, like lettuce, broccoli, kale, chard are available. Pumpkins and winter squash are in.Apples picking is over, but stored apples are still a good bargain. Learn about each apple variety here.  (be sure to see our easy pumpkin pie-from a fresh pumpkin recipe  Organic farms are identified in green!  (Fruit and vegetable festivals are here). Make your own applesauce, apple butter, salsa, spaghetti sauce and save money on food bills and eat better. See easy canning instructions/recipes, canning equipment guide! Also make your own ice cream - see How to make ice cream and ice cream making equipment and manuals

The light green indicates light crops at the beginning or end of a season - dark green is when the bulk of the crop ripens and picking is best.

Home Canning Kits

This is the same type of  standard canner that my grandmother used to make everything from applesauce to jams and jellies to tomato and spaghetti sauce. This complete kit includes everything you need and lasts for years: the canner, jar rack, jar grabber tongs, lid lifting wand, a plastic funnel, labels, bubble freer, and the bible of canning, the Ball Blue Book. It's much cheaper than buying the items separately. You'll never need anything else except jars and lids (and the jars are reusable). Remember to ALWAYS call the farm or orchard BEFORE you go - weather, heavy picking and business conditions can always affect their hours and crops!
