Notes for April 2024: Spring is here! Strawberry season is here.  It started in February in Florida, Texas, southern California and a few other areas of the Deep South; then March along the Gulf coast, April in the Deep South and west coast, May through much of the country, and June in northern areas. Blueberries are next, about a month later. Of course, cool weather crops, like Rhubarb, asparagus and greens should be available almost everywhere. Check your area's copy calendar (see this page) and call your local farms for seasonal updates.

Arrowhead Acres is a small pick your own blueberry farm located in upstate SC just off Highway 414 in the beautiful foothills of Travelers Rest. The farm is family owned and operated since 1980. The family home is located at the top of hill overlooking the berry patch, with a shed beside the berry hill for paying for berries and purchasing ready picked berries and cold drinks. Our berries are organically grown with no sprays or chemicals on the foliage or fruit. The sunny southern hillside provides sunlight from dawn until dark, giving us berries that are considered some of the sweetest in the upstate. We open for picking at first light, and allow picking during the blueberry season, which begins late June or early July and lasts for up to 6 weeks. Customers are encouraged to call ahead for berry picking conditions, and also for ordering ready-picked berries. We work to make the picking experience pleasant with clean, weed-free plants and neatly mowed rows. The unique thing is that they grow probably 20 varieties of peaches, so they are coming ripe all through the summer. Very well.   Comments from a visitor on August 01, 2010: "We found this farm/property from signs posted on Highway 130 heading up to the North Carolina mountains this weekend. The owner, Paul, is eager to get the word out and does not know how to do it. (I would not be surprised if he did not have internet access.) From my memory, I'd say it was around Salem, SC but because it was my first drive up this way, I'm not sure. The property was less than a mile off of the state road. What we loved about the property was that it is all "organic" though not officially. The only thing he uses to grow his rows and rows of mature bushes is rainwater. He'll never get enough traffic for all of his blueberries to pick and he's begging for people to come so that the birds do not get all of the spoils. Paul was as nice and friendly as could be. He provided the white picking buckets and charged us $9/bucket, which was very reasonable. (We used the same buckets at Southern Belle Farm here in Georgia and paid $10 per for strawberries.) I could have picked all day if my three kids weren't hot and hungry after an hour. He provided us with water to drink and my five-year-old even helped him prune some of his bushes. The blueberries are amazing. My two-year-old kept picking and eating! This farm was the only one we saw as a "pick-your-own" on this road. Paul has a sign right at the left turn-off off of 130 that takes you to a quick left turn to get to his property. We were doubtful since it was an instantaneous decision but once we came to the property and met Paul and his blueberries, we were thrilled beyond belief. I should have gotten more info from him but our kids were shot and ready for some lunch so we ended up making a quick exit. Hope you can find his location. He's eager to get the word out and he has so many mature blueberries that I hope others, other than the immediate locals, can enjoy them too!"

Blueberries: July 4 to September, (UPDATED: July 18, 2018)
• New Life Farm - Uses natural growing practices, blueberries
  South end of Clayton Street, Central, SC 29630. Phone: 864-654-1315. Directions: From highway 93 between Central and Norris, turn at the Southern Wesleyan University sign onto Clayton St. and go straight until the paving ends. Park on the left. Crops are usually available in June, July, August. Open: Dawn to dusk, June 15 to August 15 for Blueberries. Farm is often unattended. Honor system is used for payment. We use natural practices, but are not yet certified Organic. Payment: Cash, Check. We do not use pesticides, herbicides or fungicides on the blueberries. We do, however, use commercial fertilizers. The bushes seem to respond well to those.
